So many people often ask "How did Ophthalmologist get involved with
Botox?" It's funny. Ophthalmology and
Botox have been working together for over 50 years! During the 1950's and 60's Dr. Edward J. Schantz and others purified botulinum toxin type A into a crystalline form. Dr. Vernon Brooks discovered that small doses of botulinum relax the muscle temporarily. Ophthalmologist Dr. Alan B. then began injecting monkeys believing it could help with crossed eyes. Later, results on human participants revealed that this treatment was effective for crossed eyes, facial spasms, vocal cord and eye spasms. During more treatments Dr.'s also noticed that their patients were fabulously wrinkle-free! The muscles were relaxing so those tight frown lines were relaxing. Awesome!!! In 2002
Botox Cosmetic was officially approved for fixing frown lines.
Dr. Berkowitz, here at Howerton Eye Clinic,
Austin, has been treating patients with Botox since way long before it was "BOTOX". I think that is such a great story! If you need
